What is a rollator?
A rollator (sometimes called a rollator walker or a four-wheel walker) has four — or sometimes three — wheels, a frame you steady yourself on, hand brakes like a bicycle, and usually a padded seat and a storage bag or basket. The wheels mean you push rather than lift, and the brakes let you slow down, stop and lock the frame so you can sit safely. It is the natural step up from a walking frame when you want more freedom outdoors.
How to choose a rollator
- Four wheels with a seat — the most stable and the most popular; a seat and basket make longer walks and trips out easy.
- Three wheels — lighter and more manoeuvrable for tight hallways and indoor use, though usually without a seat.
- Lightweight and carbon fibre — the easiest to lift, fold and load into a car; carbon-fibre models like the Gemino 30 Carbon are the lightest of all.
- Seat height and frame size — choose a model that matches your height so you can walk upright and sit comfortably, and check the maximum user weight on each product page.
- Folding and storage — every rollator we sell folds for the car and for storing at home.
Three wheels or four?
Choose four wheels if you want maximum stability, a seat to rest on and a basket for shopping — the best all-rounder for outdoors. Choose three wheels if you mainly move around indoors or through narrow spaces and want something lighter and easier to turn, and you do not need a seat. If you are unsure, four wheels with a seat suits most people.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a rollator and a walking frame? A walking frame (Zimmer frame) has no wheels, or two front wheels, and no seat — you lift or push it and step, mainly indoors. Is a rollator the same as a walker? "Walker" is a general term. A rollator is a type of walker with wheels and brakes; a standard walker may have no wheels. You can compare options in our walkers range.
Can I get a rollator on the NHS? Sometimes, after a physiotherapy assessment — but choice and waiting times vary, so many people buy their own to get the model and colour they want.
