Getting back on your feet brings more than just mobility.
A walker is a supportive frame on wheels that helps you move with confidence, stay active and keep your independence indoors and out. At Helping Hand we cover two kinds: simple, lightweight rolling walkers for everyday support, and specialist gait trainers such as the Meywalk for therapeutic, supported walking. If you are looking for a four-wheeled walker with a built-in seat and brakes, you will want a rollator instead — see the difference below.
Rolling walker or rollator — which do I need?
The two are closely related, and the right choice comes down to whether you need a seat:
- A rolling walker is a light, wheeled frame you push along for steady support around the home and garden. Simple, easy to handle and easy to store.
- A rollator adds hand brakes, a padded seat and a basket, so you can rest and carry shopping — the better choice for longer distances and outdoors.
If you mostly need light support indoors, a rolling walker is ideal. If you want to walk further, sit when you need to and head out with confidence, browse our rollators.
Gait trainers for complex needs
A gait trainer is a supportive walking frame that holds you upright at eye level, taking some of your weight so you can build strength, balance and walking confidence. They are widely used in therapy for children and adults with more complex physical needs. Our Meywalk gait trainer offers supported standing and walking and is a popular choice in schools, clinics and homes.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a walker and a rollator? A walker is a wheeled or non-wheeled support frame in general; a rollator is specifically a four-wheeled walker with brakes and a seat. A simple rolling walker has wheels but usually no seat or brakes.
What is a gait trainer? A gait trainer supports more of your body weight than an ordinary walker, holding you upright so you can practise walking and build strength — often used in therapy and for complex needs.
Can I buy a walker VAT-free? Yes — if you are disabled or have a long-term illness you can usually buy VAT-free by completing the short declaration at checkout.
